We have just returned home today, February 15th, from a trip with Railway Touring Company on the WCME.
We are writing to say that the catering service from your Company on this trip was excellent. The meal timings were impeccable, the table dressings beautiful (including linen changes during our stay in Carlisle), the staff were pleasant and efficient, our plates piping hot and the food at each course was absolutely delicious - it would have done credit to a city centre restaurant.
We would like to thank your whole team on this trip for helping to make our day a most enjoyable experience. We have just booked our next trip, on The Wizards Express, encouraged by our enjoyment of today.
Lynne Jordan & Malcolm Carr
I have just returned from the Railway Touring Company West Highland Steam express, 21-24Sep and just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the trip.
In spite of the late time changes and altered itinerary, everything seemed to go very well, good running and time keeping overall with the various locomotives (although a shame we did not get to Mallaig and did not have much time in Oban)
The hotels and transfer arrangements were fine and the on board crew and catering staff were excellent. The young man who was looking after us in Coach D was a credit to your firm. He was always very pleasant, cheerful & professional and kept us well supplied with snacks and drinks. The additional roast Beef Meal we had in the evening from Fort William to Arisaig was excellent, well cooked and hot. It must be quite a challenge to provide a large number of good quality meals in the kitchen cars on these trains.
There was so much detailed planning with the various parties concerned, RTC, West Coast Railways, the water and coaling providers & Gravy Train catering.
The shunting arrangements to change 3 locos at Crianlarich en route from Fort William to Oban & then back onto Glasgow especially was fascinating to watch, everything had to be so carefully co-ordinated.
So a big thanks to all concerned.
Hopefully I will be able to go on a similar tour in the future.
STEPHEN J. GOULD.
We just wanted to say thank you to the Stewards on our trip, they worked so hard and coped well with the challenges of serving food and long, busy days. Not only did they remain cheerful and considerate but they also had a professional approach to the work and made our days more enjoyable. Please would you convey our thanks to them. We were in Premier Dining ( coach B). The food was exceptional and we enjoyed our meals so thank you to the chef for his hard work.
Unfortunately when we ordered our red wine for the last meal of the trip, we discovered to our cost the top were loose. Just to let you know after a gallon of Vanish the shirt lives to be worn another day!!
It was obvious form our time on the train that the staff worked so well and supported each, great team work. Please convey our thanks for all their hard work.
Lynne & Robert Rush.
My wife and I have just returned home after spending four days on board the Autumn Highlander, which we booked through Compass Tours.
The Gravy Train Catering Company provided the on board catering which was absolutely excellent and could not be faulted in any way. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the meals were cooked to perfection and well presented and the service your staff provided was without doubt the best service I have had for a long time, including several cruise liners I have been a passenger on.
If I can mention just one member of the team it must be Michelle. She was our carriage stewardess and she most certainly went above and beyond the call of duty. Her smile and attention to detail somehow made the journey even more enjoyable.
Please pass on my thanks to all your staff aboard the train.
June and Dave Shirley
We have returned from a 4 day train journey last weekend with Compass Tours on "The Autumn Highlander" and would like to complement your staff on the wonderful service we received. The food was spectacular and the service second to none. We asked to see the Chefs to give them well deserved praise on the last day of the trip. My husband and I have travelled a few times on the Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf Service in Canada and the food and service we received from your staff was on a par with this. We were part of the Withenshaw party of 4 and all agreed that we would look forward to future trips as long as Gravy Train Catering are on board!
Lastly, the Chef made my husband a Parsnip and Sweet Potato bake on the last day and said he would write the recipe down for me as it was so delicious. We left the train at Crewe and I wondered if he had not realised or maybe had forgotten. I have looked for a similar recipe on the internet but cannot find anything.
From Mrs Mary Bartlett, Northwich, Cheshire.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Scotland last week staying in Inverness overnight.
This is to record our thanks and amazement at the efficiency and professionalism of your catering staff on tour.
We had thought that this excellent catering service had long gone and we are so pleased that it remains.
David and Daphne Sayers
I would like to thank you for the great meals we had on the trip and the cake you got for me, the wife's face was a treat when your member of staff got to the table and had the people in the carriage sing happy birthday to her.
Just wanted to say Thank You to all your crew on the Railway Touring Company Highlander Steam Trip over the last 4 days.
Probably didn’t get to meet all of them as they were no doubt doing all the behind the scenes work involved in prepping and serving food in a small space.
But the ones we did meet were unfailingly polite, helpful, amusing and cheerful throughout what are very long days, which must have been a reflection of the rest of your staff.
This is our second trip, First Class this time and Premier previously but both brilliant.
The service and food we had will no doubt make it difficult to choose next time!
You obviously have perfected a winning formula here.
Rose & Alan Cooke
Once again I feel compelled to put pen to paper so to speak, my partner and I were on the above trip and have nothing but praise for the catering staff, my partner is unable to eat fried food, so asked Peter if it would be possible to have scrambled eggs (which were not on the menu, they also took on board not to put the fried bread on), and lo and behold they appeared cooked to perfection. The evening meal on the return trip was excellent, the chicken was very moist and the vegetables cooked to the perfect texture, now looking forward to seeing the same smiling faces on the Statesman Edinburgh trip in December, finances do not allow us to travel anymore before then, once again WELL DONE GRAVY TRAIN.
Yesterday, my birthday, I travelled Premier with my husband on Nenta Train Tours from North Walsham. What a super day we had, made all the more enjoyable by the wonderful service and food we received from your staff.
They worked tirelessly all day with such efficiency and good humour. We have travelled several times with Nenta but not in Premier, only doing so as my birthday treat. Your staff have certainly won us over, everything was far and above what I had hoped it would be.
Please convey our compliments to the Chef for the menu and congratulations and best wishes to the service staff, well done to them all, they made my day.

My wife and I have just thoroughly enjoyed nine days aboard GB6. Good weather, wonderfull scenery, and above all excellent catering. The menus were top class and the service and food, likewise. Our regular service team was Peter, James, Rachael and Katheryn, all of whom became friends.
Our compliments and sincere thanks also to West Coast Railway Co. for clean and comfortable rolling stock, adequate heat (after the first half hour, which to any rail enthusiast is understandable.) The two delays at Kyle and Alnmouth were unavoidable and caused us no problems.
We did have a good idea of what we could expect, having enjoyed the odd one day trip in the past and we were not disappointed.
THANK YOU ALL.
Neil & Frances Carney
Dear Gravy Train Team,
Jane and I had the pleasure of travelling on 'The Cotswold Venturer' yesterday on the 6th October 2012.
The whole trip was totally fantastic with a large element of the enjoyment being the culinary delights that were served by very amiable, professional and hard working staff.
Normally I am not given to writing testimonials unless what has been provided sets an exemplary standard - The Gravy Train did....
Jane and I are extremely discerning in that we have been lucky enough to eat in numerous Michelin Star restaurants over many years, usually travel First Class on 'planes etc....(None of this is meaning to be boastful), but to put in perspective where you guys measured up to.
We are fully aware that even with sufficient 'prep', serving and heating etc. from a galley kitchen for 100 people with around 8/10 staff, whilst making sure that all is hot and fresh and served individually at the table is a difficult task!
You did extremely well... so in terms of 'food on the move' - you were superb .. breakfast and dinner were both excellent!
Well done to the team that served us that day and to all others for setting an example of how things can be!
Very best regards,
Robert Leftwich and Jane Ishmael (Coach A seats 16b/16f ).
As a passenger on the recent Great Britain III Railtour from 6th to 14th April, I would like to pass on my compliments for
the food and service provided by Gravy Train Catering throughout the Tour. The service was always polite & friendly,
and I can offer nothing but praise for the quality and variation of food served, particularly when taking into account the
size of the kitchen that is used. The serving staff were very patient, as with a Tour of this length, many of the passengers
are moving around the carriages at times making it somewhat an obstacle course for your Staff. Well done to all at Gravy Train.
SPARKFORD CHEMICALS Ltd.
Just wanted to let you know how impressed we were with the food and staff on this trip last Saturday. The food was excellent, well presented and plenty of it! The waiting staff were outstanding, extremely efficient, pleasant and helpful.
We were in coach L, premier dining.
Please pass on my thanks to them, and the chefs.
To The Gravy Train Team
You really should be very proud
Of the fantastic job that you all do
You’re efficient and professional
And hard working through and through!
The Chefs deserve a medal
To come up with food that’s so divine
Cooking in such a limited space
And on a very wobbly line!
You’ve kept us fed and watered
For three whole days in tow
But always smiling and obliging
And forever on the go!
The only one concern I have
And I hate to be a bore
Because of all that gorgeous food
I can’t get through the door!!
Many thanks from Doug & Cathy Parker (Table 7) xxx
My husband and I have just returned from taking the “Fellsman Train” to Carlisle. We were lucky enough to be travelling in Premier Dining. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all your staff for a memorable day out. The food was excellent and the service was perfect. The staff were always friendly and extremely efficient. We hope to do it again in the future.
Mrs C Thomas
I would just like to compliment your staff on their great service. Although our train broke down and we did not reach Lowestoft and there were some very disgruntled passengers they smiled through it all. And they handled the very miserable lady opposite, who complained about everything and sent back her food at every meal with great calm. They were amazing. The food was superb (I don’t know how the chef does it) and we are looking forward to travelling with you again
Swanage Belle - 25 September 2010
Many thanks to all your staff associated with the above rail trip; they all did an excellent job and had a long day!

Long overdue but here's a brief email thanking you for the great service which
helped make a fabulous day even better.
We got engaged on the Dorset Coast Express and will forever cherish that memory.
Adriano & Andrea
We have recently been on some railtours and thoroughly enjoyed the meals provided by the gravy Train.
As we are waiting to Book The Fellsman with Statesman rail can you tell me if you are contracted to cater for any of these Wednesday trips during 2011. So we can ensure we book the right week.
Also we have booked the Fenland 2nd July 2011
The Lakelander 30July 2011
Are you catering any of these
Hi To You All
We again had great service from the staff on board when we travelled to Stirling at the weekend.
We’re both veggie and your chefs always seem to surprise us with a fresh menu on each trip. The food is always fresh and tasty, served beautifully and the staff friendly.
We’re off to London on October 16 with PMR and look forward to dining with you again.
You put the icing on the rail tour.
Paul and Kait
Just a line to let you know what a great weekend my wife and I had on the Jacobite Statesman. Even though it was a long trip to Fort William, the staff on board were absolutely brilliant. The service and food were outstanding.
Dear Mark & Staff
Just a note to thank you all so much for the fabulous weekend we had on the West Highland & Jacobite Statesman last weekend, 8th-10th October. What a memorable way to celebrate my 50th birthday, everything was perfect, the journey, the scenery, the staff, the weather, the hotel and the wonderful food we ate. We were so well looked after the whole time and could happily do it every weekend though I don't think our waistlines could! We look forward to hopefully seeing you all again on another trip.
Lauren & Philip Spencer
I had the pleasure of taking the White Rose from London To York and almost return. I was in Coach D, Seat 4.

Over the weekend just passed, my partner, her parents and I were on board the Statesman Rail trip to Fort William.
My partner, Nic, has to have a very strict Gluten Free diet and I would just like to say a big "Thank You" to all of your team for going out of their way to accommodate her.
We really enjoyed the experience but the icing on the cake was the tremendous attitude of all your team, the quality of the food and the attention to detail all through the trip.
Once again, a big "Thank You", we cannot wait for the next time.
Just to thank all the stewards and cooks who gave us an amazing week on GB IV. We cannot recall having such good service ,and outstanding food - the more so as it is all done on a moving train.
In particular, we hope that James had a good birthday celebration and that Rachael is enjoying her Skittles and Lucozade.
Elspeth and Jim (Coach E seats 13, opposite the RTC management team)
I am writing to say that the service provided by your team on the recent Railway Touring Co's Great Britain IV trip was truly exceptional.
The variety on the daily menus was very good, and the cooking and service were excellent at all times.
Our thanks to Richard and his team and to the chefs whose efforts made our holiday memorable.

My friends and I have been on several excursions with Statesmanrail and have always enjoyed them. Yesterday was the first time we had tried the Pullman Dining experience. I must congratulate you on a truly wonderful day. The food was delicious and well cooked, the service was exceptional and the little touches like complimentary chocolates rounded off a memorable day. It was worth every penny of the price paid. Congratulations and sincere thanks to all concerned.
Yesterday my husband and I travelled to Llandudno on your Victorian Statesman. We had a most enjoyable time made even better by the staff on the train. They were all pleasant and helpful, clean and tidily dressed. The food was delicious and the seating comfortable. The train was on time and clean, I would happily take this trip again, we are looking into taking another trip later in the year - this one was only a taster to try it out.
I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for a truly wonderful day that we experienced on your Day Trip to Llandudno on Monday. Both myself and my Husband enjoyed lovely food, excellent service from your staff and breathtaking scenery on route. We hope to join you again one day (next time you stop in Hinckley)! Many thanks.
Dear Wonderful Gravytrainers,
Cliff drew the short straw on the PMR Scarborough run on 21 May when he had to force himself out of his comfy bed at some unearthly hour to rustle up wonderful food for 400 folk in a kitchen the size of an average shower room!
Not only did he and his amazingly patient team produce tasty, plentiful and always HOT dishes to we grateful diners, he demonstrated skill, flair and exceptional cooking ability with the balance, colour and quantity of his dishes. The tenderness of the meat, the freshness of the vegetables and the expertise of the waiting staff were all five star class.
The down side of this was that he was accosted on Derby platform and given a bear hug - nay, even a peck on the cheek - by a lady who was old enough to know better, but who had appreciated the wonderful food and attention of the team. Fortunately, her husband has been married to her long enough to love her anyway!!
God bless you all
Rod and Barbara Pugh,

The Heart of Wales tour 21 May 2011
Dear Gravy train
We travelled premier class on the above trip and had a fabulous time. Thank you so much to the staff who were outstanding, extremely efficient, pleasant and helpful. This is our 3rd trip in premier class and the food was superb again. We anticipate breakfast and dinner for months before the trip as the quality and quantity of the food is so good. Once again we were not disappointed, what a feat to produce such quality food in such a small space.
We are looking forward to our next trip.
Pauline & Roger Brewer
My wife and I were on the Great Britain IV trip and had a fantastic time, thanks in large to the efforts of you and your staff.
I came to realise that the amount of our tip was quite inadequate and want to make things right as I know we won’t be back anytime soon. Also didn’t want to be remembered as those “dammed cheap Canadians”!
Please distribute as you see fit or throw it in the pot on next year’s trip.
Thanks again and continued good luck with your company.
My friend and I travelled on The Dorset Coast Express on August 16th from Victoria to Weymouth in Premier Class, I would like to thank your staff for the magnificent service they provided, the food was excellent the quality you would expect to receive in a 5 star hotel, we have never seen a team of people work so hard and efficiently.
Your staff were courteous from the time we started our journey until we returned to Waterloo, it made it a wonderful trip and we will certainly look forward to many trips where your company are the caterers.
Dear Sir/Madam, I had the great pleasure of travelling on the Mersey Moorlander train on Monday 8th August 2011, when your company were responsible for the catering. Many thanks to you and your staff. The food and service were marvellous.
On Monday 22 August 2011, my wife took me on a mystery trip as a "big-0" birthday present.
We travelled Premier Class in coach C.
I had no idea where we were heading until we reached Preston, which led me to speculate that the Settle - Carlisle line was the likely route!!
However, the team who attended to our culinary needs went into overdrive, as soon as we left Preston, with an efficient, extremely pleasant presentation of deliciously prepared and presented fayre.
Tasty Manx kippers and as much coffee as one could drink; delightfully warm Danish pastries with more coffee before arriving in Carlisle. The return journey was no sooner under way, when a delightfully balanced main course of roast lamb was presented to table. An absolute joy to the palate.
But the piece-de-resistance had to be the cheese cake!! Your pastry cooks deserve to be reported to the local police - for supply of addictive substances. Wow!!
Please pass on our thanks to all of the team, who "worked their socks off" in rather warm conditions, but who were smiling throughout the day. Thank them very much indeed. They were so much part of a very special day out.
With best wishes
Ian & Natalie Redding
I am writing to let you know how much we enjoyed the food supplied by your company on our trip yesterday. The food menu choice was excellent !
I cannot fault anything at all about the food, it was the most enjoyable part of the trip and certainly made it a special day. Not only was the food excellent the service too was excellent, your staff made us feel very special and nothing was to much trouble for them. The food was piping hot and served at a very fast speed.
Thanking you for a lovely service and most enjoyable array of food.
Dear Sir or Madam
I travelled on the above train with my wife as a 60th birthday present from my family.
From the moment we boarded the train at Newport until we disembarked back there, your staff made sure that everything was perfect. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious and piping hot. Even at the end of what was a very long shift for them they were as helpful and friendly as they were at the start of our journey.
Thank you for making the day a wonderful experience and I would be grateful if you could pass on our thanks to your staff including the chef and his team who obviously worked extremely hard and are often not thought of. I look forward to meeting them again and travelling with them in the future.
Dear Cliff and Richard,
My wife and I - how formal - really did enjoy the Great Britain V in no small part to you and your teams efforts to bring us fantastic food at our table. Although she likes steam trains Denise also looks forward to nine days of fine food and you didn’t disappoint. In fact if it wasn’t for Gravy Train catering company providing the catering she might just decide not to go. We once tried a day out on a Steam Dreams Christmas charter but was not impressed. I can tell you she is not a bad cook herself so much so that taking her out for dinner isn’t such a treat but Gravy Train meals she really looks forward to so you win her admiration for all the effort put into a meal in such confined conditions. I do not naturally choose fish as a course except Salmon but the sea bass lunch really tasted good so just keep up the good work and I am sure we will be on another train looking forward to your food.
With many thanks from Denise and Graham Johnston
